Tasting notes and food pairing ideas:
With this wine, the winemakers are trying to achieve a more Alsacian style of Pinot Gris that is richer and more complex. A portion has therefore been barrel fermented to develop texture and complexity in the final wine. This is a luscious Pinot Gris with aromas of pear and spice on the nose and a well-balanced tropical richness on the palate. Pasta with cheese will suit it well.
Enjoy now and over the next few years. Fruit for this Pinot Gris is sourced from our vineyard in northern Wairarapa and is a blend of two different clones. These are young vines with small crops that reached good ripeness levels in a long growing season – a cooler summer was capped off with a warm, dry autumn. To develop some richness and creaminess in this wine, the winemakers have barrel fermented 30% of the blend in old barrels. They've also used a variety of yeasts (including some wild ferments) in these barrels to build complexity in the wine. Of the tank fermented portion, they have used aromatic yeasts to capture the fresh, varietal character of Pinot Gris.
