Tasting notes and food pairing ideas:
This is a barrel fermented, Alsace style of Pinot Gris where the aim is complexity matched with fruit purity. Displaying aromas of summer peach and gala apple with floral notes, this wine is weighty and rounded with a dry, spicy finish. Will go nicely with freshly BBQed seafood and poultry dishes and salads with high quality olive oil.
Fruit for this Pinot Gris is sourced from the Holly block which is a part of winemaker's home vineyard in the Opaki area of Masterton. They have 2 clones of Pinot Gris planted on free draining, silt and gravel based soils. These are younger vines which carry small crop loads in order to help achieve the ripeness levels that we are after. To develop the richness and texture we are looking for with this style of Pinot Gris, the grapes were gently pressed and then fermented and aged for 7 months in older French oak barrels, using a mix of aromatic and wild yeasts.
